The days a trip gets built around

Moher, the Ring of Kerry, and a pint at the end.

The cliff path, the Kerry loop, the whiskey bond, the keep on the hill. Six Irish days most itineraries are planned around, and the best way to book each one.

The cliff day

Cliffs of Moher: from Dublin, or from Galway?

Every Cliffs of Moher day →
★★★★★★★★★★5.0· 23,331 travellers on the busiest Moher run

From Dublin it is three and a half hours of motorway each way and a very long day for two hours on the cliff. From Galway it is ninety minutes and the Burren comes with it. These three carry the most travellers; the full list splits the rest by where you start the morning.

The Dublin long day

Moher, the Burren and Galway city

12–13 hours· from $56· coach both ways

Out past Limerick before the light is properly up, two hours on the cliff path and O’Brien’s Tower, limestone pavement on the way back, an hour in Galway before the run home.

The Galway short hop

Cliffs and Burren, back for dinner

From Eyre Square· from $52· Burren included

Ninety minutes down through Clare to the visitor centre, then Doolin and the grey terraces of the Burren, with enough of the evening left for a session in the city.

The one from the water

Inisheer by ferry, cliffs from below

Full day· from $45· ferry included

Stone walls and thatch on the way out to Inisheer, then the boat runs along the base of the cliffs on the way back, which is where the 214 metres finally register.

Kerry

Kerry: the Ring, the Gap and the road to Slea Head.

Killarney keeps a national park at the end of its main street and a pony trap waiting at the gate. Beyond it the Ring runs 179 km around Iveragh, and the Dingle road turns west until the next parish is America.

It will rain

Rain is not a maybe in Ireland. Keep an indoor day ready.

The forecast on the Atlantic coast changes by the hour, and a soft day out west can shut the cliff path altogether. Every good answer is under a roof: a distillery bond, a library that keeps one book, a museum with the emigration in it, and a fire and a fiddle by nine.

The west

Galway, Connemara and the long road up the Wild Atlantic Way.

Galway is two long streets and a hundred sessions. West of it Connemara goes quiet: Kylemore under its mountain, the Twelve Bens, stone walls all the way to Clifden. Off the coast the Aran Islands keep their own hours and their own language.

What it costs

What an Irish day out actually costs.

Three price brackets, cheapest first. A good day in Ireland starts around the price of two pints and a taxi.

Under $50
381 tours

Walking tours, distillery tastings, cathedral admissions and the ferry out to the islands.

$50–150
418 tours

The full-day coaches: Moher and the Burren, the Ring of Kerry, Glendalough and Kilkenny, with somebody else driving.

$150 and up
438 tours

Private drivers, chauffeured Wild Atlantic days and the small groups that cap at eight seats.

Only here

The fiddle, the collie and the pony trap.

Castles and coast roads exist everywhere. A kitchen session in full flight, two dogs working a Kerry hillside and a jarvey with an opinion belong to this island.

Nine o’clock, no set list

The Trad Session

A session is not a concert. Players arrive when they arrive, sit in the corner rather than on a stage, and play tunes at each other until closing. The pub nights built around them get you a seat, a pint and a translation of what just happened. The good ones stop at three rooms and stay long enough in each to hear a set finish.

One whistle, two collies

The Sheepdog Demo

On hill farms in Wicklow and Kerry the working dogs come out for an hour: a farmer, a whistle and two border collies moving a flock across a field with unnerving accuracy. Most demonstrations sit inside a bigger day out, with tea and brown bread in the farmhouse afterwards and the lambing shed if the season is right.

Killarney’s oldest taxi

The Jaunting Car

The jarveys have worked the Killarney gates since the Victorians first came for the lakes. A pony, a trap, a driver with a view on everything, and a slow run through the national park to Ross Castle or the mouth of the Gap of Dunloe. It is the least efficient way to see Killarney and the one people describe afterwards.

Plan backwards

Book these before you land in Ireland.

Most of the country can be sorted the night before from a hotel on the quays. These cannot. They run on boat weather, timed slots and a landing licence only a handful of skippers hold.

  1. 01Ring of Kerry and Skellig Ring Private TourA small number of licensed boats, a season that runs May to September, and Atlantic swell that cancels days at a time.
  2. 02Dublin Book of Kells, Castle and Molly Malone Statue Guided TourTimed entry at Trinity, and the morning slots in summer are gone weeks ahead.
  3. 03Guinness Storehouse Entry TicketTimed tickets floor by floor, and the sunset window in the Gravity Bar goes first.
  4. 04Galway to Inisheer Aran Islands, Cliffs of Moher and Boat TripThe ferries run to tide and weather, the summer sailings fill, and the island beds go before the boats do.
